Inside tunnels and on city squares in South America's biggest city more than 1000 children have been living underneath highway overpasses. The Estado de S. Paulo newspaper said that the study, conducted by Sao Paulo city officials, showed that about 1030 children are homeless in Sao Paulo, a city of more than 10 million people. Also it said another 3000 that are not homeless work on the streets, selling candy or begging to help their families. And the number of homeless is small if compared to the 3.1 million children living in Sao Paulo. But it highlights one of the city's most visible problems. Sao Paulo has five homeless shelters. The city officials said three more are expected to open by February, the newspaper reported. The city's goal is to have at least 11 by the end of the year.
